Observation 81981: Cortinarius melanotus Kalchbr.
When: 2011-10-23
Collection location: Thoiry, France [Click for map]
Herbarium specimen reported

Notes: Found under spruce, fir.

Cap olive green, with black radial fibers, gills and stipe olive green to yellow-tan. Stipe with black banding. Non-viscid in cap and stipe. Context and cap red in KOH.

The micro-shot is of spores from the veil at 1000x in KOH. The spores are sub-globose, brown, warted. The apr. size is 7 × 6 um.

This all matches up rather well with the desc. for C. melanotus in Funga Nordica, p665. The black fibers in the cap didn’t turn out that well here in the shots. I had a larger one with more obvious fibers, that didn’t get photographed. The black fibers were more obvious as the caps dried. I missed being careful about the photos and that feature in the rush of getting down as many photos as I could that day.

Found it, I did have a photo from the field of the larger one with better black fibers in the cap disc. These seem to become more apparent with the age of the mushroom, and as it dries out.

Nice!

This is what I expect them to look like. I have been hoping to find them for so long, but not managed yet.
