Observation 82542: Cortinarius vellingae Bojantchev, Ammirati, Garnica & Beug
When: 2011-11-13
Herbarium specimen reported

Notes: See http://mushroomobserver.org/82466?q=99GV
Checked KOH reaction ~ 24 hours later. Reddish on flesh and slightly darker on surfaces.
Spores ~ 10.0-11.1(12.0) X 6.8-7.5 microns and very verrucose.
The spores seem larger than "Cortinarius fulmineus sensu Moser & Ammirati and even somewhat wider than the Cortinarius xanthodryophilus sp. nov. And the KOH reddening on the flesh also seems to eliminate the latter possibility.

Proud of you Ron. When I come to the USA next week, please take me to your secret cort garden. This Phlegmacium is high on the list for proper description. Keep the collection, we may make it a type if I can’t get one myself.

D.
