Observation 83101: Armillaria (Fr.) Staude

When: 2011-11-23

Collection location: Teague Hill Open Space Preserve, San Mateo Co., California, USA [Click for map]

Who: Tom (LanLord)

No specimen available

Appeared to be growing from buried wood or roots in mixed woods. They had an incredibly strong fragrance, it was very pleasant, almost like a perfume. None were very large, mostly large pin state fruits, regardless where I found them throughout the forest.

When they were growing in clusters, they were all attached at the very base, when they were growing single, they had a huge bulb.

I’m really conservative when it comes to eating mushrooms.

I love to find them, I love to photograph them, but eating is something I do
only when I have an expert actually see them, look closely at them and verify
the ID.

Did you eat them?
