Observation 83949: Hygrocybe acutoconica (Clem.) Singer

When: 2010-08-18

Collection location: Culpeper Co., Virginia, USA [Click for map]

38.0° 78.0°

Who: Penny Firth (pfirth)

No specimen available

Very shiny, wet bright red or orange mushrooms. Most 2-3 cm diameter. Fruiting in driveway gravel edges.

Surrounding trees include tulip poplar, red maple, several oaks, redbud, virginia pine.

Local rock is granite and quartz, no limestone.

I have 2010 and 2011 photos from June 20, 26, July 9, August 18, 19, and Sept 3.

No spore prints or gill shots: I’m just now learning about the importance of those to ID.

Any thoughts much appreciated.
