Description of Mycena scabripes Murrill is in Smith North American Species of Mycena p. 236-237. According to Smith (l.c.) known from “Tennessee, New York, Michigan, Montana, Washington, Oregon, and California in the United States and Ontario in Canada.”

The new (Melbourne) Code of Nomenclature opened the gate for creating new names for old, +/- well known taxa without more detailed studies of the actual organisms. Vascular plant nomenclature went through the same process ca. 30-40 years ago and as a reaction to that madness, my friend Mila Kovanda (Taxon 1985) made a proposal to the nomenclature committee that people creating new combinations should see the original types of the taxa involved. That proposal was rejected, since it would have led to massive lectotypification of the old names that would be harder to ignore than the proposed new names. Adolf
