I like your suggestion. The photos on MO for this species appear to have at least 3 distinct types: M. galericulata with a yellow brown stipe; a white Mycena with a thick white stipe with some darkening toward the center of the cap, and the little guys from Switzerland by Doug Smith that really look entirely different. Most of all I like this post:

which says to me: if it has a yellow stipe it is M. inclinata.
