are not synonyms at least according to Thiers, H.D. 1997. The Agaricales (Gilled Fungi) of California: 9. Russulaceae I. This makes this collection series (### 85885, 85301, & 69671) extremely valuable for a DNA sequencing. The fact that some people (including my beloved Consensus) consider them synonyms makes this material even more valuable. We are optimistic and believe that the sequencing can be done soon. However, it won’t be soon enough before the tie between the MO observations and the corresponding herbarium specimens will be lost. Look at the +/- haphazard changes that Consensus did in the last two days:

Taste or spore color?

Am I correct in assuming it was acrid and the spore print was white (per R. cremoricolor)?

Not Russula cremricola

As Adolf points out the colors are wrong. However, that also means it isn’t Russula silvicola since they are considered synonyms.

Is it really Russula cremoricolor?

We collected what we think is Russula cremoricolor on the same collecting trip (cf. MO # 85301) and that one did not have any “shades of brown, red, and/or purple” (Thiers, Agaricales … of California) as this one has (MO # 85885).
See also our earlier posting of Russula cremoricolor from this locality (MO # 69671) that looks more like our MO # 85301. We are afraid that the name Russula cremoricolor does not fit to this (MO # 85885) observation, but “the Consensus is always right!”
