Recognized by sight: very dark purplish brown color is characteristic. Some mycologists do not acknowledge H. subfuliginosa and subsume it under H. fuliginosa. H. subfuliginosa is strictly confined to deciduous wood and very rare. H. fuliginosa is confined to coniferous wood and pretty common. Getting cracked when dry or older.
Based on microscopic features: long sharp pointed brown setae in the hymenium.
