Observation 87510: Cortinarius luteicolor
When: 2011-10-16
Herbarium specimen reported

Notes: This is another gorgeous Phlegmacium in the calochroid clade, “anthraquinone” sub-clade, that I have collected around Yosemite a couple of times before. There is one observation with it on MO already. This species has been collected before in the PNW (GenBank: HM068562, FJ717511, EU057024), but represents a key data point for Yosemite.

Based on the type studies that Tuula Niskanen and Kare Limatainen are doing this one is unequivocally Cortinarius orichalceus f. luteifolius A.H.Smith. I did not expect to see that name match, but it did. The taxon will have to be promoted to a species rank, so that name will be changed eventually.
