I may start bringing a few chemicals along when I’m out, but I’m drawing the line at takeing a UV light up the mountain

This looks too irregular, dull, lumpy, “ugly” to be C. uncialis. But not thick enough to be C. caroliniana? You were there in person. Check photos of both and see what you think. I could go either way. (By way of verification, if you happen to have 350nm UV light, you should be able to get UV+ white/blue off of C. uncialis.)
