I feel like I’ve seen this thing…

But I can’t find it anywhere. I’ve searched our emails, my notes, everything. I think I’d vote for C. caespiticia.

I noticed the difference

It must be at Bennett’s, then, but I’m surprised I didn’t send you a “copy” – there was plenty of it to go around. Somehow, it’s got name attached to it – I wouldn’t dare to do it myself to non-fertile Cladonia, so I blamed you :-). Must be another one of my mistakes. I suggest using your best guess, then, until I get some ID from Bennett, anyway.

I don’t think so

I can find no record of this specimen. Is this one you sent to Jim Bennett? Look at other photos of C. apodocarpa. These squamules are totally different: all splayed out and crenulate. They are supposed to be almost unbranched tongue-like straps with rounded to somewhat truncate entire tips. Maybe this is one of the subcariosa group, like C. symphycarpia? The scale is ambiguous, maybe these are too small for all those, and you should consider caespiticia instead?
