I see that atropurpurea is a synonym for vinacea.

Also, from an older post here at MO I see that vinacea had been considered a synonym for krombholzii… which MO now lists as an old name for atropurpurea. Wheh! I suspect maybe there’s currently both a Euro and a North American name/version…?

The early occurring Russula

that I find here (usually not before May) I have IDed as what Audubon calls Blackish Red Russula (fromerly Russula krombholzii). I usually detect a slightly unpeasnatly fruity odor. I’m guessing that even in Missouri finding a Russula in mid March is just crazy!
