the name I was going to suggest – this large orangey-salmon Hygrophorus came into the FFSC fair in January 2012, and it has been found in SoCal under oaks as well. As Irene and Gerhard noted, there is little point in relating it to the European H. nemoreus (which it barely resembles).

I vaguely remember this

It does not look like the C. pratensis I am used to seeing in the area. I have also never seen pratensis in QH or the surrounding area. Only in the mountains. Also, if I thought it was pratensis (going by smell), I would have likely collected it for Henry & Marje to eat (I find it terrible).

Differences

the gills of these specimens are hardly decurrent at all, the caps are darker and more streaked/blotched, and the stipe is very robust (about near the extreme for C. pratensis in our area as far as I can tell). I’ll keep an eye out for it.

No, don’t have anything on this one.

Adam was probably with me, I don’t think I’ve gone to Quail hollow without Adam. I’m sure I didn’t think that much of this one, just took the photo and moved on. I’ve seen lots of variation in C. pratensis, I don’t usually think much of the differences.

do you have a specimen for this?
It reminds me of what we have been calling H. nemoreus sensu CA.
If not, do you remember the general area of the park you saw it? Was Adam with you (maybe he will remember).
