The cottony context of the interior stipe plus the time plus the suggested Verpa

All add up to and early collector of these. Clavariadelphus truncatus would have been a good guess had the collection occurred in October or November from WA.

No need to apologize for “ignorance” as it was an informed guess based on what was left, bloodworm. You should search for some of my “ignorant” guesses. I’m still often stumped on “stumps”.

These are Verpa stems. Christian nailed it.

I was baffled, but Christian said Verpa, and the scales fell from my eyes.

I know several people who enjoy Verpa. Some may just enjoy beheading them, but certainly others like eating them pickled. It does seem odd they left so much though.

That’s what I thought, but they seemed so naturally headless, and there was like 8 or 9 of them like this. Very confusing.
