Observation 93171: Peziza phyllogena Cooke
When: 2012-04-20
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Could be a Peziza sp. possibly… Fruiting intermixed with Morchella sp. in bark mulch that was laid in Spring 2011. Deep, burgundy red color-emitting a smoky haze of spores when tapped or handled. Very fragile flesh.

Largest specimens were 8-10cm around.

Temp: upper 60’s, partly cloudy.

about breathing in the spores. Haven’t started hacking up a lung yet(knock on wood) but I was lucky enough not to try and catch an image of the spore release while hovering over any specimens. Thanks again Dan!

Do not breath the spores. I was coughing up lung butter for two weeks after this encounter with Peziza phyllogena:
