Observation 9367: Hydnotrya Berk. & Broome
When: 2005-10-11
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Collected near Timothy Lake, Clackamas Co., OR. Perhaps the largest specimen of Hydnotrya I have ever seen. Were it not for the mushrump it pushed up, I may not have seen it. Suggested to be Hydnotrya colossa by Adrien Beyerle. Found near Western hemlock.

Hydnotrya species as yet undetermined

There is no doubt that this specimen is a Hydnotrya species. To date there is not a H. colossa species name. As usual putting generic names on truffles is usually much easier than getting a species name. A species name msot often is the result of microscopic study of the spores and micro-features of sterile tissues. When in doubt send it to me for species identity.

Send me an email for the protocol for sending specimens in for ID.
