Growing from well rotted wood on soil, mixed mesophytic (elm, white ash, white pine). Very slight smell, mushroomy. No bruising. Very good mushroom texture and flavor.

young specimen of Polyporus melanopus..?
Puzzled by this one found on a spring foray with the Wisc Mycol Soc…was presented to me at the foray, found on well rotted wood on soil, I was told. Looked at first like a Boletopsis, but cap is very concave, or Albatrellus. Flavor and texture is very good…I would eat this mushroom. No bruising.
