The solution is simple

Allow the MO observation name changes ONLY to the original user who posted those particular observations. You can keep the Consensus and similar nonsensus for MO observations that are not supported by herbarium specimens, but for MO observations supported by the herbarium specimens, leave it on the original user to check the specimen and decide. Also, to fight for what synonym to use does not make any sense.

do not show synonyms. you have to go to the name page to see that name’s list of synonyms. neither do name pages necessarily list all of a given name’s synonyms, nor the correct ones, only those users have added (or subtracted) themselves, which makes our nomenclatural database considerably more prone to mistakes and omissions than those of either MB or IF, since anyone of any degree of expertise can make changes at will.

Jacob never argued that updating observations with their most preferred/current names was essential, but it’s far from completely pointless. those of us who can navigate the site in our sleep can find the More Observations (All Synonyms) link for a name and be satisfied. The 99% of the rest of the usership doesn’t know that button exists, is unlikely to find it, and are therefore only exposed to synonyms when they occupy a single observation, as in this one.

The problem is with the way information is stored, sorted and represented on the site, not the efforts of the enthusiastic few who try to make the the best of an imperfect situation.

I responded to the opinion you’re displaying in the last thread where you dumped it, and you chose to redump it here instead of responding to the argument? > _ <

thanks for proposing one of the synonyms from the list of synonyms, Jacob. The rest of us aren’t capable of seeing that these names are synonymous, so that was so super helpful of you.

Thanks Adolf

Maybe you could play the Pokémon instead of complaining about people helping MO. It’s more fun and you won’t bother other people.

If you have too much spare time, don’t waste it on making MO observation name changes. Switch to the Pokémon. It’s more fun and you won’t bother other people. Adolf
