It is a little scary and/or gross at first, but can be a MAJOR help in some identifications, and just for getting another sense involved in the fun of taxonomy.

Gymnopus peronatus is peppery, like many Russula and Lactarius.

Simply chew a tiny piece with your front teeth, and make sure to place it on the tip of your tongue. Wait a bit to make sure there isn’t any latent flavor or sensation, and then spit it out. If you are exceptionally fearful, wash your mouth out afterwards.

It brings a whole other level to your forays.

I refused to eat it

Or taste it. But the smell can be described as non-existent, no aroma at all.

Do not think
