Substrate: Mossy dirt, on top of rock. Unprotected from sun and wind.

Habitat: Rocky, open area in ecotone between sagebrush steppe and riparian aspen community. (Same area as the Phaeophyscia and Dermatocarpon specimens)

Recognized by sight: gotta be… even though it’s hard to verify the woolly matted rhizines and darkening veins (although the fact that you can’t clean them off in order to see them well is itself highly suggestive that they must be matted!)
