I don’t like the word Burl :-(

It sounds almost like Burp. Just kidding. I see these all the time – always on cherry, although there are somewhat similar, but bigger ones on oaks. It was suggested to me that these are A.morbosa , although I doubted it, since it’s very difficult to connect “normal” Black Knot – long thin fungus on small branches – to these monstrous balls. There are some similar looking ones – at Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Black_knot.jpg (for what it’s worth). I also have a book Diseases of trees & shrubs by W.Sinclair et al. – it shows similar formation, although the photo there is pretty poor.

Though this does look to be on cherry, I doubt that this size and material seem right.
