was made in a grassy area underneath an apple tree. B/R/B do not mention the KOH stained context change to orange in the NA bolete book account. Maybe my collection represents a variety of this species?
Or perhaps chemical reactions vary regionally? I have noticed that chemical reactions for some of my collections of boletes – that otherwise key out very well – do not always match up with those reported by B/R/B.
Also, it is my understanding that chemical reactions are most prominent when the material is very fresh. Often it is the case that a collection of mine may be several hours old before I get it home and apply a chemical.
