I usually do this when I’m pretty certain that I re-found the same mushroom at the same place. This time around I took spore print (brown), took photos of prominent band-like annulus and tried to see if KOH application would match those described in North American Boletes by A.Bessette et al. Well, the general idea was the same, although it’s hard for someone with less than ideal color perception to see olive color on brown pilipellis, or figure out what “vinaceous cinnamon” color looks like. Bessette calls for KOH olive on pileipellis, KOH gray on context, KOH vinaceous cinnamon on tubes.
And by the way, I agree with Mycowalt’s S.subalutaceus versus my original ID of S.hirtellus (that wasn’t even close:-(
