Pluteus can grow on the ground

Most of the time you will find Pluteus directly in connection with wood or wood remnants but that is not always the case

As Britney says there might be buried wood or other debris but sometimes Pluteus grows as a terrestrial fungus.

It is not rare to find Pluteus petasatus growing like this.
