Wide gilld spacing, but

notice how the gills grow together. I believe this is one of many Australian species which is in the process of becoming sequestrate. Growth on wood suggests saprophytic, but some Australian sequestrate truffle-like fungi are known to fruit up to 30 meters on the sides of tree trunks, especially along the NE corner of Australia. A fascinating area, and one which will hold lots of important information for the future.
