that we have a lot of X. subpileatus observations masquerading as one or both of these (or some entirely different) proposals. curious what field characters set them apart.

I don’t know much about either species – X. subpileatus or C. murrayi

The only other observation of X. subpileatus by Tom Volk – observation 18734 – looks very similar to this one. Other sources on the web show mushroom looking very differently.
