Observation 9870: Candelariella vitellina (Hoffm.) Müll. Arg.
When: 2008-08-22
No herbarium specimen

Notes: On base of magnolia in spray zone of sprinklers, among heavy layer of algae. On northwest corner of Bellfontaine and Fairmont. Several lichens on this tree — quite remarkable for urban Pasadena!

A chemical spot test would be more conclusive — it should be K+ slowly red, an unusual and distinctive response. It should also have more than 8 spore per ascus.
