Observation 9870: Candelariella vitellina (Hoffm.) Müll. Arg.

When: 2008-08-22

Collection location: Pasadena, California, USA [Click for map]

Who: Jason Hollinger (jason)

No specimen available

On base of magnolia in spray zone of sprinklers, among heavy layer of algae. On northwest corner of Bellfontaine and Fairmont. Several lichens on this tree — quite remarkable for urban Pasadena!

A chemical spot test would be more conclusive — it should be K+ slowly red, an unusual and distinctive response. It should also have more than 8 spore per ascus.

Candelariella is yellow thing in upper left, Physconia in spread out in the rest.
