C. morchella grows in very acidic conditions and is almost exclusively neotropical with one disputed record from Southeast Asia. it is usually found on large logs where the ph is below 5. C. fruticulosa & varieties may also grow in these conditions, but is more typically found on smaller diameter logs having phs of 6 and above.
