These two are on Betula but it likes both hardwoods and conifers. I can’t remember if I’ve found it on Populus. I find it fairly often in my area, but usually later in the season.

I’ve got references for it in How to Know the Gilled Mushrooms – Smith, Smith, and Weber, and it’s described in Smith’s and Stuntz’s unpublished monograph. Also various sources around the web. Michael Kuo has a good page on it here: http://www.mushroomexpert.com/pluteus_granularis.html

I find something similar looking, but on other trees.
