Dr. Tulloss, and thank you Eva for posting this. I only very rarely get to see this species.
suggesting frostiana is the presence of rather long marginal striations on an unevenly colored cap in the top photo. Striations might appear on the cap margin of an older or drying flavoconia; but this appears to be a fresh, young cap.
Amanita frostiana also has a fairly distinct “rolled sock” (ocreate) volva at the top of the bulb (but I can’t convince myself whether I see this or not in the third photograph).
If you have material in your hands and there is some question of the presence of the above characters, the ellipsoid amyloid spores of flavoconia can be segregated from the subglobose inamyloid spores of frostiana, but that takes having some iodine solution on hand…and a microscope.
persistent above the bulb? Is that why you went with A. frostiana over flavoconia?
