Yellowish-grey to greyish-white cap drying greyish-brown.(Methuen 6D3 and 7D3 for the grweyish-brown). Pileus 95mm Dia. × 5mm thick, with a small darker umbo, orbicular with a plane margin. Striations were 30/47. caps dry, dull and non-appendiculate. No detectable odor or taste. Context, white with no staining, was 4mm thick in the center to non measurable 22mm from center. The pileal striations were sulcate with some of them being forked 12mm from the margin and others forked 5mm from the margin. No UV remnants on the pileus, but there appeared to be very fine appressed fibrils near the disk. No staining or bruising reaction. Lamellae were white with white faces. Gills appeared to be adnate and left seceeding lines on the stipe apex,and close to subdistant.Lamellulae were plentiful with some being very short near the margin; others 1/2 to 3/4 the length of the lamellae. The stipe was white, solid to stuffed, tapered slightly towards the apex, had many brownish hairs on it, and was 130mm from apex to the bottom of the base. The volva was white and tough, sac-like; peeled easily and was not attached to the base. The distance from the base to the top of the volva was 32mm. No annulus present. Found on a lawn on a wet day. Surrounding trees were predominately Oak. Spore print white.

It turns out that the sequences of rooseveltensis vary a very little bit. Its not possible (so far) to derive a “proposed fungal barcode” gene for __rooseveltensis; however, it is possible to get nrLSU. We now have at least four sequences of the latter gene (“nuclear ribosomal large subunit”).

I started with material I personally collected on lawns in Roosevelt. Now I’m working outward to collections from a wider area.

… in the Roosevelt herbarium, Dr. Kudzma and I have taken several actions. Among these are the following that are relevant largely (but not exclusively) to material of section Vaginatae received in Roosevelt mostly prior to this time last year (May, 2016).

1. Collections of potential rooseveltensis materials not already in his hands for sequencing were organized as previously described in a comment below, sampled by Mary Macher last Friday, and sent to Dr. Kudzma on Saturday). This material was given an elevated priority for sequencing.

2. Samples of potential rooseveltensis already sent to Dr. Kudzma in the past were given an elevated priority. The extraction process on this material has begun or will soon begin.

3. Other samples currently in Dr. Kudzma’s freezer have been prioritized in small groups with assigned group-level priorities—-that will determine the order in which the groups will be processed . This will allow a few more of the samples (than previously expected) to be tackled in smaller clusters during the summer—-when Dr. Kudzma is in and out of his lab (has limited lab time).

Your collection has our accession number 558-4. It has not been scheduled for sequencing yet. We are working up a set of new samples to be sequenced that will cover a wide range of cap colors, volva forms, etc. to try to establish the morphological variation for rooseveltensis. As you know, we have a lot of material from Luzerne Co., PA, and Monmouth Co., NJ. So we will be making decisions based on what will provide the most variation in the sampling. Geographic variation is going to count. It looks like we might have a geographic range extending from Maine to Texas. Mountain Top is only represented in my herbarium by this specimen; so we will add your material to our sampling list. That makes 9 already in the queue. And ten to be added to the queue including this one. That’s enough for awhile unless we get some from states not represented in our collection.

This species is probably what Dave W. calls my “old number 17.” If that is the case the spores should be broadly ellipsoid to ellipsoid.

I would be interested in seeing your dried material. I’m hoping to get to DNA sequencing of species in section Vaginatae. If that becomes possible, material of this species should be fairly near the top of the list.
