Kawaratake fruiting beneath old growth Douglas fir, Western and mountain hemlock.

Older specimen- note pore structure beginning to elongate. When young, the margin is persistently incurved, the white pore structure is dense and the pores are sometimes even difficult to see macroscopically with this species.

Black capped, radially streaked, bitter taste.

Elevation: approx. 3000ft.

Temp: mid 50’s. Unusually warm for this time of year.

Dehydrated and ground into powder this mushroom renders a very spicy, somewhat bitter mushroom flavor for soups and sauces.
