Collection location: Atascadero, California, USA [Click for map]
Location is a rural setting in dry grassland/scrub with scattered oaks and pine.
Habitat is a crumbling outcrop of Monterey shale.
Thallus without isidia or soredia, upper surface greyish, lobes mostly >1.5mm, lower surface pale to brown and blackish at lobe tips, rhizines sparse, black, simple. Thallus K- (maybe some slight yellowish tint but I think my K solution is strong and it is burning through the cortex into algal cells), KC-, C-; not aereolate but some specimens could be described as somewhat lobulate, which this species is not supposed to be (see photos).
Medulla white with continuous algal layer, K-, KC-, C-. Didn’t have P spot test chemicals, but supposed to be P+ yellow/orange. Taking that step in the Nash key (K- and P+, couplets 54 and 55) with thallus surface smooth, takes it to couplet 57 where it goes easily to X. novomexiana with subirregular lobes and subrotund tips. Phew.
Three specimens from this area in lichenportal.org are from sandstone.
