A pair fruiting within 2-3 feet of where I observed a solitary specimen about a year ago; in a grassy depression left when a tree was cut down on residential common ground. An early Spring here due to warm temps. and plenty of rain.

A really fresh specimen.

determined that Discina is within Gyromitra, right?
“Gyromitra sensu lato forms a monophyletic group within the Discinaceae composed of five distinct subgenera and 11 well supported clades that include Discina, Hydnotrya and Pseudorhizina.”
Methven, Andrew S., Steven E. Zelski, and Andrew N. Miller. “A Molecular Phylogenetic Assessment of the Genus Gyromitra in North America.” Mycologia 105, no. 5 (2013): 1306–1314.

Gyromitra caroliniana I was advised that the genus had been changed to Discina. Now MO is telling me that Gyromitra caroliniana is the preferred synonym. So???
It helped a lot to understand what’s going on with the Gyromitra genus. On the other hand, it’s discouraging to note that the disagreement between the “lumpers and splitters” which is “in need of further study”, as the authors say, is still unsettled and that paper was published in Mycologia in 2013! Since Mycobank currently lists Gyromitra caroliniana (1872) as the preferred synonym (as does MO), I think I’ll go with that. Apparently the preference for the name/classification Discina caroliniana (1968) hasn’t held up well enough to be widely accepted. It seems the lumpers are winning on this one to date=) Thanks again for your help.
