I always considered this one a cold weather Amanita, because that was the only time I ever saw them was in Fall/Winter months, could have just been how things went in the areas I was foraging in.
I remember the cold would make the cap have nice purplish hues sometimes, a pretty Amanita.
Rod Tulloss has determined that Amanita lavendula is our American species, regardless of season. It develops the lavender color as you said in cold conditions.
