Many lichenologists restrict C. holocarpa to rock

and call most North American material on bark C. pyracea. See: Arup, U. 2009. The Caloplaca holocarpa group in the Nordic countries, except Iceland. The Lichenologist 41(2): 111-130.

(Yes, I know, you don’t live in Scandanavia, notwithstanding long-running jokes by Garrison Keilor, but note that they specifically cite North American material in their analysis.)
