Notes:
Massive rainfall and temperature drop to lower 70s saw these fruiting throughout a large area in leaf litter covered dirt under trees. I need to learn to ID trees too!

Appreciate the info! I did notice they had quite a depth of material to push through when I went to pull one, the base was always much deeper under litter than expected.

Glad I was in no hurry to eat these! :)

Toxic species in section Xanthodermatei!!

Many visual features of your mushroom associate it with the group of poisonous species that includes A. xanthodermus. Agaricus leptocaulis is a species known to range as far south as the Smokey Mountains, and is a “best guess” but reasonably likely to be correct for your specimens. Phenolic odors and yellow reactions with the KOH reagent are two other features of this group.

Many species have a bulb at the base and although it is often tempting to use the name A. abruptibulbus… well, it can be dangerous in a case like this one. That can also lead to a lot of confusion. (When I found this record, the name A. abruptibulbus was attached. BTW, A. campestris is very different… does not grow in the woods, for starters.)

As for variability, the depth at which the pins form and the structure of any material they have to push up through, and the CO2 levels that they therefore experience, are the largest modifiers.

If this turns out to be Agaricus campestris can anyone explain to me the variations in physical characteristics such as height-to-width ratio? My examples look taller and thinner than most examples I saw online.

I know that, for example, enoki are grown down in a bottle so they will grow long stems trying to get out of the bottle and escape the CO2… so I imagine there are all sorts of environmental variables that would effect physical characteristics, CO2, nitrogen, oxygen, humidity, sunlight, substrate, etc etc etc
