i doubt that this is that species very much. a key feature in sensu auct. europaei are the “veins” on the cap that i don’t see here, i just see a striated cap.

is usually smaller than these and more yellow. These were fresh.

The colors seem a bit washed out.

So maybe this is an older specimen that has endured some rainfall? I’m assuming that P. admirabilis is not being considered on account of the stipe showing no yellow. Looking at some of the P. admirabilis posts here on MO one sees variable yellow on the stipes, with some examples showing no yellow at all. (One of my own P. admirabilis posts shows a white stipe… which I suppose had been the reason for my “promising” level of confidence.) Mushroom Expert offers a short discussion of P. admirabilis look alikes, some of which have white stipes. Quote is found directly below.

The European species Pluteus leoninus is similar, if not identical. Some North American authors use this name to represent a Pluteus that shares all the features of Pluteus admirabilis but has a white stem. The North American species Pluteus melleus and Pluteus chrysophlebius, if they are truly distinct, have duller yellow caps; the former has a pale yellow stem, while the latter has a white stem.

Haha, yeah. They actually secrete the foul smelling liquid from between the plates of their exoskeleton. If you get the liquid on you, it is kind of hard to wash off the smell.

Yep, I put it there and I noted his defensive odor which I do not find offensive. Not sure I would consider eating it anyway…
