Found on well decayed hardwood branch and on leaf litter as well. Could maybe be the same as this observation:

Negative in KOH.
Q-tip tops approx 1-3 mm across. “Spores” were very tiny (less than 4 microns long), lacrymoid, and hyalne.
Xylariaceae? Sime mold?

X. scopiformis is common in the Cuba, not that far from Tennessee, and I don’t see bifurcated ends in the photos. X. hypoxlon seems more polymorphic. Still, the spores are pretty dense at the ends and unevenly distributed.

this looks nothing like 66066 to my eye, nor does 66066 look anything at all like X. hypoxylon, or what we’ve agreed to call X. hypoxylon. I think we apply too few Xylaria names to too many upright, sturdy, lignicolous, (and except where conidia-bearing) black ascomycetes.

Xylaria to me. But Xylaria is a rare genus for me to find. Looks too fuzzy/cottony for Xylaria alone.

with smaller than 4u spores, and never heard of lacrymoid shaped spore slime mold

if so some random cross sections may show perithecia and dark ascospores, evidence of which can’t be seen from the outside. If it is Xylaria those tiny spores would fit with the hyaline conidiospores of the genus.
