A general category of mushrooms that have a set of nested layers, the outermost of which splits into a set of star-like arms that generally lift the spore mass up. This is generally assumed to make it easier for raindrops to hit the spore mass thereby helping to spread the spores.
Genera include Geastrum, Astraeus, and to a lesser degree Sphaerobolus. Interestingly this strategy appears to have evolved separatedly in Geastrum and Astraeus as according to Index Fungorum (as of Nov. 17, 2013) they are in separate families and only have connect at the class level Agaricomycetes.
