Notes: This private reserve and ecolodge is expanding as adjacent land comes up for sale. They are actively restoring land that was formerly cleared for pasture, mostly by planting alder trees and letting other species come in from the surrounding forest. The lodge is definitely geared towards birdwatchers, but they seem to be enthusiastic about research projects in the cloud/rain forest. Some research on orchid taxonomy and ecology is ongoing. Good diversity of elevations and stages of forest succession. About 1.5 hours by car from the San Jose/ Juan Santamaria International Airport, northwest into the mountains, mostly on narrow mountain roads.
