The term “deprecate” is not defined in the Code.

Don’t make nomenclatural changes based on hearsay.

Scott Redhead can be sometimes wrong as well, cf. his Melanotus textilis Redhead & Kroeger, Mycologia 76(5): 868 (1984), an agaric that Scott described in the ascomycete genus.
Index/Species Fungorum does not support Scott Redhead’s claim that the 1772 name in Fl. Norveg. had been published before 1762 Fung. bavar. palat. nasc. name:
Agaricus citrinus Schaeff., Fung. bavar. palat. nasc. (Ratisbonae) 1: tab. 11 (1762) and
Agaricus citrinus Gunnerus, Fl. Norveg. 2: 126 (1772)
That the nomenclatural side of this problem. But, have you seen the types of Schaeffer’s & Gunnerus species?

Agaricus citrinus was published first in a Norwegian journal…

prior to its publication by Schaeffer. This means that Schaeffer’s name does not have priority. I’ve explained this previously. The oldest known name for the organism in question is now Amanita mappa. This is not a personal opinion of mine. It was called to my attention by Scott Redhead among others. I checked for myself. It is a phenomenon of following the laws of nomenclature.

Very best,

Questions for Rod Tulloss

Why does Index/Species Fungorum list Amanita mappa as a synonym of Amanita citrina? Why do you think this taxon should be called Amanita mappa? Nomenclature is (or should be) just a working tool of taxonomy. MO users should thrive for correct identification rather than for the most correct name, without being concerned with the group taxonomy.

One day I will come here…

And Adolf will actually be interested in what the current correct name is more than beating this dead horse yet again.

When I am rebuilding a page, I’m working to improve it, not remove it.

There is no question that Amanita mappa is (at this date) the correct name for the taxon previously called by several names including A. citrina and A. bulbosa.

Very best,

Rod

Deprecate this deprecation

Nomenclatural changes should be done with a good knowledge of the Code and the taxonomy of the given group. Please, undeprecate deprecated Amanita citrina!
P.S. I have repeated many, many times that the term "deprecate” and “deprecation” cannot be found in the Code. These terms are specific to MO and in the Code it +/- vaguely translate as “not validly published”, “illegitimate”, or just misspelled. Please, please, deprecate the deprecation!
