NEUROSPORA CRASSA LOOKS LIKE AN ORANGE BREAD MOLD, ALTHOUGH IT CAN ALSO BE WHITE IN THE ALBINO PHENOTYPE. IT PRODUCES PERITHECIA AS IT’S SEXUAL REPORDUCTIVE STRUCTURE, OR ASCOCARP. THE PERITHECIA HAS AN OSTIOLE WITH PERIPHYSIS AND PARAPHYSES IN A PALISADE LAYER WITH THE ASCI. IT CONTAINS ROSETTES OF ASCI, ALWAYS CONTAINING 8 ASCOSPORES. THE ASCOSPORES ARE PITTED, WITH PALE CLEFTS IN THE DARK ASCOSPORE WALLS. THE PERITHECIA HAS A PIGMENTED WALL, AS A RESULT OF ITS CAROTEINOID PIGMENTS.
