This is a genus of green algae that can be found growing free on rocks and weathered wood, and also frequently enters into symbiosis with a diverse set of fungi to produce lichens (mostly tropical and subtropical) such as: Astrothelium, Cryptothecia, Dendrographa, Dimerella, Dirina, Glyphis, Graphina, Graphis, Gyalecta, Hubbsia, Laurera, Lecanactis, Lecanographa, Myriotrema, Opegrapha, Phaeographina, Phaeographis, Porina, Pyrenula, Racodium, Roccella, Roccellina, Schizopelte, Thelotrema, and Trypethelium; some Arthonia, Chaenotheca, Coenogonium, and Ionaspis; possibly also Sarcographa.
