Originally thought to be a subspecies of P. rhodoxanthus by Singer. Differs most significantly from the latter in a white basal mycelium.

Pileus red brown, immediately blue-green with NH3. Flesh yellowish white, cyanescent. Lamellae decurrent, yellow, cyanescent. Stipe red brown with white basal mycelium.
