This actually occurs in lichen literature

It is usually written as:

Lecanora sp. 4 sensu Śliwa & Wetmore 2000

Everybody and their dog has a “Lecanora sp. 4”. The sensu is required to clarify exactly whose “sp. 4” is meant — in this case the publication where it was described.

This is definitely more than a random cryptic or private name. This is in an actual published subgeneric revision paper.

What, incidentally, does “crypt. temp.” actually mean? If I look it up on-line will I find a definition somewhere? Or is this something peculiar to Rod Tulloss?

how the name was originally entered, which was Lecanora “sp-4” sensu Śliwa & Wetmore 2000. all I did was add ‘crypt. temp.’ i agree that this should probably be changed, but I figured I’d leave it to a lichen person.

Since this name is sensu Śliwa & Wetmore, who is the original author of Lecanora “sp-4” and what is the difference? Also, why have you put the date in the author field?
