Name: Chlorophyllum rhacodes
Author: (Vittadini) Vellinga
With apologies to Else (Vellinga), I am listing this orthographic variant (alternative spelling in layman’s terms) of Chlorophyllum rachodes as valid since it is the one listed as ‘correct’ in the Index Fungorum. The issue of the spelling this epithet is a long standing argument about the intent of the original author vs. a strict interpretation of the rules of botanical nomenclature vs. what is the ‘accepted’ spelling. This particular case was actually one of the motivations for Mushroom Observer supporting multiple valid names in a set of synonymized names.
For now this website treats the two names as synonyms (which everyone agrees with) but considers them both valid. It would be great if people with a strong opinions added notes to clearly express their position. However, I would ask that until there really is a clear consensus on the issue, please don’t deprecate either name.
