Boletus subtomentosus L. 1753 : Fr. 1821.
Xerocomus subtomentosus is the type species of the monophyletic Xerocomus sensu stricto as per Josef Šutara’s “Xerocomus s. l. in the light of the present state of knowledge”, Czech Mycol. 60_(1): 29–62, 2008.
Phylogenetic studies published in 2013 by Nuhn et al. “confirm the distinctness of this species and its close relatives from the core group of fungi in the genus Boletus sensu stricto”. The latter name is currently reserved for B. edulis and other “porcini-like” boletes. See: Dentinger, B.T.M., J.F. Ammirati, E.E. Both, D.E. Desjardin, R.E. Halling, T.W. Henkel, P.-A. Moreau, E.
