Rank: Group or Clade
Name: Amanita vaginata group
a specific authorship citation in association with Amanita sect. Vaginatae. This is clearly a mistake. I don’t want to deprecate this name it has an informal use that is valuable on MO especially for non specialists.
To allow something as vague as “Amanita vaginata group” to replace something substantiated by 21 years of taxonomic work and extensive teaching (including teaching here on MO) is very unfortunate.
Taxonomists can use the name that they feel serves their purpose. Since we currently have two sets of “authorities” that different people want to use for Amanita section Vaginatae, let’s recognize both of them as in use; but, please, let’s not make either of them an equivalent of “Amanita vaginata group”.
I would argue, for example, that it is imprecise and could be understood to specify a group containing Amanita vaginata var. alba, but not the species of series Ceciliae or those of series Penetratirices or or those of stirps Crocea or those of many other small to medium sized groups of species that are distinctive and fall in section Vaginatae.
Amanita vaginata group is a smaller group than Amanita sect. Vaginatae – the section includes species like A. fulva which do not resemble Amanita vaginata.
