Brief Description:

A burn Pholiota; pileus brown (light to strong brown; lacking reds); stature often squat; stipe relatively thick (often > 4mm), whitish, not turning light brown (tawny) when old or handled (not “brunnescent”); not caespitose; smaller caulocystidia (< 40–120 × 10–40 µm).
But sometimes DNA is needed to distinguish P. highlandensis from P. molesta.
